Cleveland Jobs with Justice Global Trade Committee The Cleveland Jobs with Justice Global Trade Committee tracks events and legislation at state and national levels relating to international trade, primarily as trade affects jobs and working standards. Our goal is for trade pacts to be negotiated for the good of working people and a sustainable environment, rather than in the interests of corporate profit. We currently support the Trade Reform Accountability Development and Employment Act (TRADE ACT)! We fought against NAFTA. We fought against "Fast Track." We fought against CAFTA. Now we can fight for the TRADE Act! International trade is essential to the economic survival of the United States. However, trade agreements increasingly have been crafted in theinterests of corporate profit and to the disadvantage of working people. NAFTA-model trade agreements negotiated by our government over the past few decades have resulted in outsourcing of good jobs from states like Ohio to nations where workers can be exploited and where environmental laws are weak or can be ignored. There is hope in Ohio of reviving manufacturing through "green jobs". If U.S. trade agreements are not improved first, these jobs will go abroad. |
Passage of the TRADE Act will begin to repair the United States’ failed trade policy by stipulating what trade agreements can and should do to improve the lives of working people here and abroad by: * Enforcing internationally recognized (ILO) labor standards * Rewarding companies that stay in the U.S. * Permitting nations to enforce environmental protections * Ensuring product and food safety * Ending the passage of trade agreements via ‘Fast Track’ without review by Congress * Overhauling existing flawed trade pacts like NAFTA before negotiating new agreements |
