Saturday, April 26th Over 20 Cleveland Jobs with Justice activists from Cuyahoga and Lake County held a peaceful and educational protest at an anti-immigration discussion held at the Morley Library in Painesville. A panel of the local law enforcement officials was assembled by Ohio Jobs and Justice PAC and two other area anti-immigration groups |
The USW is calling for support for the U.S. Food and Product Responsibility Act, introduced in the Senate by Sen. Sherrod Brown and in the House by Rep. Pete Visclosky, D-Ind. This legislation would safeguard Americans against toxic food and products by shifting the responsibility on to the backs of the companies producing the goods and the importers importing them. In support of the National Day of Action, U.S. Representative Betty Sutton introduced a resolution in Congress, recognizing the importance of food and product safety. "I am very proud to join my Steelworker brothers and sisters and other union members from all across this country to work on an issue so important to our families" said Sutton in a statement released on January 16th. "As the U.S.negotiates and rubber-stamps trade agreements with countries that have inadequate safety standards, our families are increasingly exposed to the dangers of food and products that do not meet the standards set by the U.S. for the safety of consumers." On Wednesday, April 30th we showed our solidarity with Communications Workers of America District 4 as they rallied to Fight for Our Future in downtown Cleveland. Their contract with AT&T expires in less than a year and they are preparing to fight for a fair contract for their members. Toxic Avengers Come to Cleveland! Wednesday, May 28th was another day for a Toxic Trade march in Downtown Cleveland. This was a joint effort between the National Headquarters of the United Church of Christ, the United Steelworkers and Cleveland Jobs with Justice. The subjects of this march were none other than the "Toxic Twins" - Bush and McCain. Pink slips were given to both Bush and McCain for their stance on trade. Download your copy of the flyer here! |
Cleveland Jobs with Justice Rallied against Privatization in support of OAPSE Local 238! The Madison School Board privatized the school bus service and we showed them that privatizing jobs is not what the community wants or needs! Over 200 supporters from other union locals, Cleveland Jobs with Justice and the community showed their solidarity with the Madison drivers on Tuesday July 22nd. We will continue to show our support when needed. |
Cleveland Jobs with Justice joins the Case Farms picket line Seven activists mobilized and traveled to Holmes County on September 9th to show our solidarity and support to striking Case Farms poultry plant workers who walked off the job in a fight for a living wage and safer working conditions. After choosing to organize last year with United Food and Commercial Workers Local 880, employees who have worked at the plant for 20 years are still earning just over $8.00 an hour. Months of negotiation and a Federal Mediator led to the company offering a small increase which still would have paid less than their non-union counterparts working in a plant owned by the same company located in North Carolina. The employees voted overwhelmingly 294-12 to reject the company's .15 cent package with no seniority and no health benefits and went on strike. In addition to the low wages, the conditions at the plant are deplorable. - Workers in the deboning area are expected to debone 40 chicken breasts per minute - No ventilation system in the summer leads to temperatures upwards of 120 degrees in the boxing area. - Many of the workers still working in the plant are Guatemalan, Puerto Rican and Romanian immigrants who are intimidated and afraid to join the strike. Case Farms supplies chicken locally to Kentucky Fried Chicken and Taco Bell. |
John Ryan from U.S. Senator Sherrod Brown's Office, State Representative Michael Foley (D-14), Cleveland Jobs with Justice Coordinator Debbie Kline, UFCW Organizer Tim Mullins and representatives from area churches spoke through a bullhorn to the workers remaining on the job who had come outside for their lunch break. One worker decided to walk off the job and join the cheering picketers. |
Thursday, February 14th Unregulated trade is getting more dangerous by the day. It's killing jobs, exposing our families to toxic products, poisoning out pets and the environment. Yet, Senator Voinovich keeps voting for trade deals that put our families and our economic security at risk, including: ~ PNTR for China (Permanent National Trade Relations) ~ CAFTA (Central America Free Trade Agreement) ~ FTA for Singapore (Free Trade Agreement) ~ FTA for Chile (Free Trade Agreement) It's time the Senator voted to regulate trade for a change. Wednesday, January 16th We braved the cold to show our solidarity with United Steel Workers here in Cleveland and throughout the country on their national day of action. Leaders from throughout the country visited over 100 members of Congress to enlighten them to the fact that cheap goods have a high price. We demanded our Congressional leaders take action as we put them on notice that our trade laws must champion safety and environmental standards as well as workers rights. We need to protect our families, homes, workplaces, and communities from toxic imports. |

Cleveland Jobs with Justice joins National Day of Action - Junk Food for Junk Bonds Cleveland Jobs with Justice participated in a National Day of Action with 12 other local Jobs with Justice Coalitions. Community, faith and labor advocates conducted rallies, street theater, bake sales and 'billionaires for bail-outs' actions to tell Congress and Wall Street that people are fed up with corporate greed and demanded a "Main Street Recovery Plan." In solidarity our message was clear! We were telling Congress "No Bail-out!" unless they addressed the following: - Make the people that created and profited from the mess pay for the clean-up, now. - Any infusion of capital must have specific, binding public ownership requirements. - Restructure and rein in the reckless private financial institutions. - Pass a real recovery plan, for Main Street as well as Wall Street, paid for with progressive taxation, that addresses the needs for good jobs, affordable housing, health care, pensions, infrastructure and 'green' economy. Cleveland Jobs with Justice, together with 40 area activists from 13 coalition partners and other social justice organizations joined us as we protested the $700 Billion bail-out. |
Passersby were given junk food with the message to "Stop Corporate Greed - Put Main Street before Wall Street!" Cleveland Jobs with Justice was sending the clear message to Congress and Bush that we did not want them to bail out a corrupt system. Instead, we wanted them to build a system that works before they decided to invest $700 Billion of our money by giving away a corporate handout. Thank you to all of our Cleveland Jobs with Justice Coalition Partners who responded to the call for action by donating either food or money and their time to our striking Case Farms families. Fourteen volunteers also made the trip down to Winesburg in Holmes County, Ohio to join the strikers in the biting cold weather for a short time before heading to the warmth of Miguate, a local center for immigrant families located in Dover, to deliver the food to the families. Many of the women and children from the families were there to greet us as we unloaded the food we had collected over the weeks prior to the trip. The strike at Case Farms has gone on for over 4 months while the company has refused to bargain in good faith. Please see the story below for more information about the Case Farms strike. CLEVELAND JOBS WITH JUSTICE JOINS WITH THE TEAMSTERS TO DEMONSTRATE AT KEYBANK TO DEMAND FAIR USE OF CORPORATE BAILOUT DOLLARS! |
Cleveland Jobs with Justice joined with the Teamsters to demonstrate at KeyBank calling for a People's Bailout and for KeyBank to stop financing Oak Harbor Freight Lines' war on workers. KeyBank is set to receive $2.5 billion from the Troubled Asset Recovery Program (TARP). But instead of using the money to give relief to those hardest hit in the current economy, KeyBank is using their bailout money to increase corporate profits by buying other banks and underwriting Oak Harbor Freight Lines, a company that has cancelled its retirees' health care and violated US labor law and international labor standards affecting hundreds of striking Teamsters in Washington, Oregon and Idaho.
